Database Retention
To effectively manage data volume, MDSS provides the ability to clean up specific types of information after a defined period.
MDSS focuses on certain types of information that tend to grow significantly over time.
- Audit records can be automatically cleaned after a configurable number of days.
- Report records can be automatically cleaned after a configurable number of days.
- Real-time processing history can also be cleaned after a configurable number of days.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is RTP history retention?
Real-Time Protection (RTP) retention is a feature that allows the system to automatically delete old files from the database based on a specified retention period. This helps in managing the database size and ensuring that outdated data is removed
What is deleted during RTP retention?
The database entries corresponding to the file that were discovered and processed by the Real-Time Protection (RTP) are deleted. This includes all metadata and scan results associated with the files.
What happens to the files after they are deleted from the database?
After the files are deleted from the database, they can be rediscovered. The rediscovery process involves scanning the storage again to identify and process the files as if they were new. This ensures that the system can reprocess files that are still present in the storage but were previously deleted from the database due to retention policies.
Having retention disabled, can the same file be discovered on multiple storage units?
Yes, the same file can be discovered on multiple storage units. The system treats each storage unit independently, so if a file exists on multiple storage units, it will be discovered and processed separately for each unit.
Having retention disabled, will my files be rediscovered if they are moved to another storage unit and then put back in the source storage?
Yes, if the files are moved (via our remediations actions) to another storage unit and then put back in the source storage, they will be rediscovered. The system will scan the storage again and identify the files as new, allowing them to be reprocessed.
What are the recommended default values for retention settings?
- Clean up audit records: 30 days
- Reports retention: 30 days
- RTP history retention: 90 days
We recommend enabling retention, especially when dealing with large traffic to ensure optimal performance and manage database size effectively.
