Installation details
The default installation path for MetaDefender Storage Security resources is the /etc/mdss folder.
The installation package will automatically install the following dependencies if they are not already present on the system:
Debian / Ubuntu | Red Hat Enterprise / CentOS |

Installation components
MetaDefender Storage Security automatically deploys the following components:
Name | Version | Type |
|---|---|---|
Docker Engine | system defined* | Containerization technology |
Docker Compose | system defined* | Container orchestration |
PostgreSQL | v17.0 | Database |
RabbitMQ | v4.3.5 | Message broker |
NGINX | v1.29.2 | Web server |
Redis | v8.6.6-alpine | Data Cache |
Our system uses the existing Docker version if available. If not, it automatically downloads the latest stable version using the docker-install script.
On RHEL, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, CentOS Stream and Amazon Linux, install Docker before installing MDSS. The installer cannot reliably install it for you on these distributions.
On RHEL 10 and AlmaLinux 10, reboot after installing Docker. On a freshly updated system the running kernel and the installed kernel modules can be out of step, and docker.service fails to start until the machine restarts.
Using Podman instead
On RHEL and Rocky Linux, Podman is a supported alternative, and Red Hat supports it natively on those platforms. To use it, install podman, podman-docker and a compose tool, then set the following in /etc/mdss/customer.env before starting MDSS:
Additional prerequisite for offline and portable deployments
The offline and portable packages bundle Docker as static binaries, which carry no package dependencies of their own. iptables must be present or the bundled Docker daemon fails to start:
