Do email aliases consume licenses in MetaDefender Email Gateway Security?

This article applies to all MetaDefender Cloud Email Security releases deployed on Windows systems.

Yes, email aliases do consume licenses in MetaDefender Email Gateway Security (EGS). EGS counts each unique email address it processes—including aliases.

When Active Directory (AD) integration is enabled, EGS can verify and count only real, existing addresses. This helps prevent non-existent or fake addresses (such as those used by spammers) from using up license slots.

An alias is treated as a separate email address, even if it points to the same mailbox as another address.

Example: If john.doe@example.com is a user's main email, and support@example.com is set as an alias to the same mailbox, both addresses will count toward the license.
